Introduction
3 Kinds of Cards

If you look through a standard Yu-Gi-Oh deck, you will see many different cards. Despite the wide variety of individual cards, all cards can be placed into 3 distinct groups, Monster Cards, Spell Cards, and Trap Cards. Spell Cards have a green border, and trap Cards have a light purple border. Monster Cards can have many different border colors, but their borders are usually yellow or orange. If you master the use of these 3 types of cards, you will become an expert in no time.

Main
A Detailed Explanation

Monster Cards
Monster cards are central to the game. You can use them to attack your opponents and their monsters. Many of them also have helpful effects. Below is an image of a monster card.

Most monster cards can be further classified as Normal Monsters or Effect Monsters. Effect monsters have a special effect Normal monsters do not. Luster Dragon in the picture above is a normal monster and thus has a yellow border. Effect monsters have an orange border. In general, you play monsters during your turn and can attack with them during the Battle Phase. I will go into further detail about monster cards in the next lesson.

Spell Cards
Spell cards are the second most used kind of card in the game after monster cards. They have helpful effects that can turn the tables in a duel. Here is an image of a spell card.

Pot of Greed is a normal spell card. Other kinds of spell cards have a symbol below there name indicating that they are different. Most spell cards can only be played during your turn. However, there is an exception that I will address in a future lesson.

Trap Cards
Trap cards are the least commonly used kind of cards, but don't be fooled. Trap cards are used in almost every deck. They effects can be used to surprise your opponent and launch an offensive when they are least expecting it. Here is an image of a trap card.

Sakuretsu is a normal trap card. Just like monster cards and spell cards, there are other kinds of trap cards. These different types are indicated by a symbol. You cannot play a trap card in the same way you do with a monster or spell card. You must set traps first. Then, after your turn is done, you can activate the trap when the conditions are right. I will go into more detail on traps in a later lesson.

Closing
Many Crazy Cards

The Training Continues
Despite, some of the basic rules I have laid out. Many cards break these rules in some way or another. There are many kinds of monsters, spells, and traps beyond what I have taught in this lesson. It will take time and practice to master them all.

Homework
- Memorize the 3 Types of Cards and their usual colors
- Keep dueling and have fun

Trivia
- Spell Cards were originally called Magic Cards in the TCG prior to the Magician's Force Booster Pack
- Spell Cards are still called Magic Cards in the OCG
- Each new anime series, starting with Yu-Gi-Oh 5D's, has introduced a new kind of monster card that plays a central roll in the series
- In Bandai's Official Card Game, there is a 4th type of card called an Equip Card which later became a type of spell or trap card in the TCG and OCG
