IntroductionThe Origin of Yu-Gi-OhYu-Gi-Oh began as a manga (Japanese comic) franchise created by Kazuki Takahashi. After relative success, it was adapted into an anime (Japanese cartoon). The franchise slowly evolved to involve a card game known as Duel Monsters as its centerpiece. Duel Monsters has become very successful, and is, of course, the reason you are at this academy.
MainHow to Play Yu-Gi-OhSet-Up
To illustrate the set-up, I will use this image of a play mat.
[Only admins are allowed to see this image]Yu-Gi-Oh is a 2 player game. Each person has a
deck of 40 to 60 cards. On a play mat each deck is placed on the farthest right square closest to a player. Directly above the deck in the image is the
graveyard, the usual place that cards go when they have been used or destroyed. To the left of the deck are the
spell and trap card zones, where you can play spell and trap cards. Monsters go in the
monster card zones to the left of the graveyard. Note that there are only 5 of each of these zones which means that you can only have up to 5 monsters and 5 spells or traps in play at one time. To the left of these zones, are the
field card zone on top and the
extra deck (labeled as the fusion deck in the diagram). However, we will ignore these last 2 zones for now.
In Yu-Gi-Oh, a single game is called a
duel. A
match is a set of duels in which players play best 2 out of 3 to determine the winner. To start out a duel, players place their decks in the proper zones and then play rock, paper, scissors. The winner decides who goes first. Players then draw 5 cards each from their deck. Each player also starts out with 8000
life points. If a player runs out of life points, they lose the duel. Usually, a players try to reduce their opponents' life points to zero.
Gameplay
In Yu-Gi-Oh, turns go back and forth between players. Each turn is divided into 6
phases. The first phase is the
Draw Phase. During the draw phase, the turn player draws one card. In the next phase, the
Standby Phase, certain card effects are applied. The
Main Phase 1 comes next. During the Main Phase 1, the turn player can summon monsters, use spells, set traps, and do other things that will be gone over later. After the Main Phase 1, the turn player can enter their
Battle Phase, where they use there monsters to battle with their opponents monsters or to attack their opponent directly. However, on the first turn of the person who goes first, the player cannot enter the Battle Phase. After the Battle Phase comes the
Main Phase 2. All actions that can be performed during the Main Phase 1 can also be performed during the Main Phase 2. The final phase is the
End Phase. During the End Phase, certain card effects are activated or applied. After the End Phase, it becomes the next players turn, and the cycle continues until somebody wins the duel.
